Design and Planning

garden path lights

FIrst of all you have to think where exactly you want the lights to be - if you need all over the garden at random or in specific places.  What are the angles you want the lights ? and what exactly do you want to be lit up? . Not forgetting the intensity of the lights.

The intensity of the lights are measured in Watts or Lux as the intensity gets higher the electricity will cost more and you have to take this into consideration when buying the lamps as certain lamps are not made for high intensity.

When planning your garden lighting you  should take into consideration also the electrical system which should be water proof and with all approvals and standards.

Design

Outdoor lighting gives you much more then you might think, especially in the winter, when the landscape gets interesting.  First, there are fewer daylights hours in winter, however in the winter there is a less interest in garden lights generally, so you have  one more reason to invest more on your lights.

Then again outdoor garden lighting is something  you will need in the summer, when it is nice to be outside in the evenings, the idea of outdoor lighting is to enjoy it, rather then show it off to others. In the 21st Century we feel  that outdoor  lighting should be electricity, but it is not that way at all.

In order to install electric garden lights you need a proffesional for the job, You not only have the cost of the lights but also the cost of having them installed.  However if you can install them yourself then you obviously save yourself the cost of the installment.

It might sound strange, don't laugh, but did you consider  candlelight in your garden, it gives you a natural,  romantic, relaxing feeling, and it wil cost nothing compared to electric ones. You obviously ask what about the wind and the fire risk - You can purchase beautifull outdoor candleholders that protect the flames from the wind and are quiet safe.  When choosing your lighting take into consideration your flowers and plants in the garden and fit the lights into the landscape as best as you can for the most beautifull effects.

The most easy way to impress your neighbours and friends is too install high power coloured lights at strategical points on the ground facing upwards toward the sky.  For instance a big ordinary tree can be made absolutely stunning by having a green light shining upwards onto the leaves of the tree.  This light will make the tree stand out and be seen from quiet a distance.

Large Trees: If the tree has open growth, let the light spill down through the leaves and branches, creating interesting shapes and contrasts in highlight and shadow. If the tree has full foliage, like some pines, try cross lighting or using a grazing light. If your focal point tree has an interesting bark texture, try grazing it to accent this feature and add a greater element of visual interest

Specimen Plants: Consider hanging plants as well as ground plantings for focal point lighting. Try to throw shadows of smaller plants on walls and other surfaces for added effect. Bonsai plants are very effective when silhouetted to accent their unique shapes
